In preparation for the ORF festival musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst, which takes place under the motto "interconnected interdependent" from October 5 to 8 in Graz, we go in search of the origins of music in nature and for this we take a standard work from the bookshelf, which has already served as inspiration for many musicians, - "Das große Orchester der Tiere" by the musician and nature and sound researcher Bernie Krause.
It is a passionate invitation to a more attentive listening, because in the course of centuries we humans would have forgotten to find an access to the great acoustic narratives that are hidden in the wild soundscapes.
Forrest floodlights
Und wir laden zu einem Ausflug in das nördliche Mühlviertel. „forrest floodlights“ ist der Titel des Gemeinschaftswerkes von Abby Lee Tee, Franziska Thurner und Manja Ristic, das soeben im Rahmen einer unserer beiden SHAPE+ Artist Residencies 2023/24 entsteht. Ende Juli haben sich die drei Künstler:innen in Harrachsthal getroffen, um einige Tage mit ihren Aufnahmegeräten gemeinsam die Gegend zu erkunden.
Die Landschaft im oberen Mühlviertel sei zwar wie überall in Österreich stark vom Menschen geprägt, so Abby Lee Tee, es gäbe hier aber auch noch relativ viel Naturraum. „Das ist auch dem früheren eisernen Vorhang hier in der Nähe geschuldet“, erklärt Abby Lee Tee. „Manja und ich beschäftigen uns in unseren künstlerischen Arbeiten viel mit Wasser und ein paar Kilometer von hier entfernt befindet sich die europäische Wasserscheide, es ist also ein sehr wasserreiches Gebiet mit sehr vielen schönen kleinen Bächen, Teichen und Seen.“
Garage Drushba
We invited the artists of musikprotokoll 2023 to view their environment as a dynamic network of relationships. And it was just such a network of relationships pointing in many directions that would have unfolded here during the days spent together at the end of July, Franziska Thurner tells us.
"Garage Drushba is an old truck garage, my great-grandfather had a transport company here. More than 30 years ago, my father converted it into a cultural initiative. After my father passed away, unfortunately it became quiet in here. But with the residency, we turned the lights back on. That was very, very nice."
SHAPE+ is the platform for exciting new projects from the field of music and audiovisual arts of the festival network ICAS, which was founded in 2014 by musikprotokoll together with fifteen other festivals. It is funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union.
