In the early 1990s, Andrew Lagowski founded his solo project S.E.T.I., with which he also intended to draw attention to the Californian institute of the same name, which has been dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence since 1984. As musical starting material, the artist used files of extraterrestrial vibrations circulating on the internet that were captured by scientists as part of various space programmes and translated into sound. However, the sounds of self-imagined forms of communication with extraterrestrial life forms also flowed into the music.

Over the years, Lagowski has creatively turned the four letters of his artist name around repeatedly. In response to human failings in the face of myriad crises, they have already stood for "Search for Evidence of Terrestrial Intelligence." Furthermore, on the occasion of composing his latest work, Observational Field, S.E.T.I. received a new meaning. Here, the abbreviation stands for "Scientific Evidence Translated for Introspection." Once again, the macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm, as extraterrestrial vibrations translated into sound are reinterpreted as reflections of cognitive processes. The mental journey into space becomes a search for the innermost self.
