Heute schrieb ich nix is Daniil Kharms’ appearance in Alexander Chernyshkov’s Errortheater, his music theatre company for provoked misunderstandings. Chernyshkov makes music by theatrical means. Everything finds its way into his score — from the stage direction to the stage machinery, from the auditorium to the backstage. He composes found sounds and situations into contrasting genre collages between synth-pop and Bach, in which the world’s sounding crystallises into music theatre.
Conceived as a transcription of an error, his art is a refuge in the midst of events — and in this it is closely related to the poetry of Daniil Kharms. Inspiration is also provided by the biography of the poet, who wrote throughout his life with no hope of publication. Kharms’ life and work in the shadow of totalitarianism finds analogies both in contemporary Russia and in the feeling of helplessness with which — as Chernyshkov observes — every person confronts life.
