American composer Steve Reich, one of the most influential musical thinkers of our time, celebrates his ninetieth birthday on 3 October. To mark the occasion, STUDIO PERCUSSION graz realises an extraordinary project. The artistic connection between Reich and this ensemble reaches back to 1981, when its artistic director Günter Meinhart toured with the composer. Since then, Reich’s works have been a fixture of the internationally renowned ensemble.

Within 24 hours, works by Reich are performed in 20 programme items at 25 selected locations across the city. Around 90 musicians and one extreme athlete shape this unique event, which deliberately leaves the traditional concert hall behind and turns the city itself into a stage. GRAZ spielt STEVE REICH becomes a major cultural event that links musical excellence, urban space, and innovative performance formats — reaching far beyond the confines of the traditional concert format.
