Klaus Lang relates his composition emblemata sonantes. to Eggenberg Palace in Graz and the year in which its baroque reconstruction began. The work is a journey through the palace's days of splendour in 1625 translated into sound - in 365 days, which correspond to 365 bars. The texts of the emblems from the castle's pictorial programme appear in the process. Emblems are combinations of sayings and images that together have a moralising message. Those in Eggenberg were mainly written by the Spanish diplomat Diego de Saavedra Fajardo. Properly understood, they encourage the wise exercise of power. Lang uses historical instruments in mean-tone tuning with 19 notes per octave, which are played by the Graz-based ensemble Ārt House 17. With this new sound world between baroque and modern, he adds a contemporary dimension to the rich artistic history of Schloss Eggenberg.
