Over the years, accordionist Zbigniew Chojnacki has developed his own unique setup: he thinks of his accordion and the electronic equipment connected to it as a single instrument. In his solo concerts, which are always one hundred percent freely improvised, he enjoys playing with the audience’s expectations. Some concertgoers have described his music as cyberpunk, while the profusion of different sounds he is able to draw from his instrument reminds others of orchestral music. “The accordion is not a loud instrument,” says the musician. “And sometimes I have the impulse to see how loud I can play it. But my music can also be very soft and minimalist; I like contrasts. In any case, I try not to think about it very much while I am playing. The most important thing is that I have fun. I simply try to be myself.”
