Personal Soundscapes

Project

What does your everyday life sound like?
A project to participate and listen.

The radical composer John Cage found that environmental sounds do not disturb but can even be understood and heard as music. We do the same: your smartphone is your recording device. Record what you hear and where you like it. Send your personal soundscapes via smartphone app to our website. There you can listen to your and all other recorded sound fragments online, exchange and download them for editing and then upload your soundscape composition. At the end of the Graz festival musikprotokoll, the Personal Soundscapes collected in this way will be the source material for an ORF Kunstradio, which can be experienced in front of an audience and live on Radio Ö1.

The knowledge area offers materials for dealing with the terms soundscapes and field recordings, the ideas of John Cage and the Canadian composer and sound activist R. Murray Schafer, etc. - A number of international experts and Ö1 journalists present numerous audio and video files, texts and photos in 10 thematic blocks around the topics: Perceiving everyday sound and composing with everyday sound.
