Social Music VI: Shadow of a Shadow
It is already a tradition that Kunstradio produces a contribution to the yearly festival musikprotokoll, which deals with the extensions of the notions of "music" are undergoing through media and digitalisation. As the titel of this year's musikprotokoll is "living room: the social dimension of sound waves", the curatorial concept, Brandon LaBelle had developed for "Social Music" within the framework of the ongoing Kunstradio-series "...curated by..." immediately suggested itself to be brought forward in the context of the festival. And it was an obvious choice to invite LaBelle himself to develop an on site-on line-on air project for Graz as his strong "interest in site-specificity reflects a desire to consider the relationship between art and a broader social environment." The poetic title "Shadow of a Shadow" points to the precarious relationship between the real and its virtualisations, which becomes experiential to us only by calling up data in the specific forms of an evermore complex system of networked old and new media. It is the real/virtual architecture of the characteristic entrance hall of the radio-building in Graz which for an hour connects itself live with the virtual spaces of different transmission- and recording technologies and to the different real and psychological spaces of the listeners/users, which at once, is "site", "content" and "instrument" of the live-project.
