The search for freedom in slowness

musikprotokoll 2024. "Slow music" von Daniel Szwed, Christina Ruf und Erik Emil Eskildsen

"The use of slowness. It takes time for something to exist/emerge. Allowing time to exist. Time for it to (emerge) freely in space." As part of a SHAPE+ artist residency, Shape+ artist Daniel Szwed (drums, electronics) created free spaces together with Christina Ruf (electric cello, electronics) and Erik Emil Eskildsen (touch guitar, electronics) following predetermined structures. At the centre of the joint musical process was the slow development and shaping of sound textures. Each sound should be able to unfold slowly and be shaped by the musicians. "In this slowing down, this intensified moment, the spaces in between come to the fore. The space between the musicians, between the sounds, between the musicians and the listeners."

In order to offer the audience an immersive listening experience, Szwed, Ruf and Eskildsen worked with the 48-channel Ambisonics Sound System of Graz's Dom im Berg during their performance on the first concert evening of this year's ORF musikprotokoll. And the result is a radio piece that celebrates its world premiere in today's Zeit-Ton. Mix and mastering: Erik Emil Eskildsen.

The Shape+ platform for exciting new projects in the field of music and audiovisual art was co-founded by ORF musikprotokoll at steirischer herbst in 2014. It is funded by the "Creative Europe" programme of the European Union and Pro Helvetia.
