Ö1 is changing its programme in his memory and broadcasting a Zeit-Ton portrait that was created in 2019 to mark his 60th birthday.
At musikprotokoll 2025, to which Peter Ablinger was closely associated for many years, several of his works will be heard - including the world premiere of "Wendel" with the Vienna RSO. We pay tribute to an artist who made listening himself a theme - and whose work will remain with us.
He always had a notebook with him. He jotted down projects, ideas, graphic sketches and philosophical thoughts, not just about music and aesthetics. Peter Ablinger has lived in Berlin since 1982. He was born and grew up in Upper Austria. He went to Graz to study jazz piano and composition. His musical work focusses on listening. The precise, differentiated hearing of various gradations of sound. It is about presence in the here and now, about boundaries, illusions and being thrown open while listening. Compositions, concepts and playing instructions, experimental arrangements for listening, Peter Ablinger likes to work in series and create new listening experiences for instruments, sound generators, electro-acoustic instruments or sound installations. A basic theme is explored from different angles. Whether in "weiss/weisslich", whose works explore the diversity of white noise, or "Voices and Piano", which deals with doublings, reflections and, last but not least, variations of perception.
