Hands-on mit π node

In Search of the Future of Radio What surprises does radio hold in store for us? The media artist’s group π node joins forces with protagonists of esc medienkunstlabor, mur.at, Radio Helsinki, pd-graz and realraum to examine how the narrative, participatory and imaginary potential of this medium can be realised in the future. For the duration of the festival a temporary social space will open for visitors to give free rein to their creativity. The group of radio activists and artists provide a wide range of cutting-edge and sometimes older technologies with the aim of enabling reflection on the basic historical and societal conditions of radio. π node see radio as an instrument that anyone can learn quickly and easily. The doors of the radio workshop will open on Tuesday, 7 October, before the festival starts. Anyone interested is welcome, and maybe you can even take part in the first performance on Thursday evening.

Workshops/Open House

09/10 - 12/10/2014 | steirischer herbst Festivalzentrum 2014 (Paulustorgasse)
14.00-16.00 h

An invitation to 6 days of collaborative workshops, open meetings and discussions with soldering irons, advancing the work fields of the open source Π-node project : build microFM zones, construct radio broadcasts, make multi stream relays and mixes, do frequency captivation and radio data transmission.

Participants will learn how to :
- build small range analog FM receiver/transmitter.
- create a small digital FM transmitter.
- listen and capture various frequencies from 20 MHz to 2.4 GHz.
- transmit data through radio frequencies (airchat, minimodem, ...).
- design, build and calibrate FM antennas.
- create radiophonic relays through water, laser, airwaves, potatos ...
- use or transform radios into musical instruments.
- document the different processes, in the open source philosophy.

Participants are welcome with or without any experience in programming, electronics, soldering and/or radio transmission.

More about π node

π-node is an experimental platform for the development of a hybrid web/FM radio format. Through the interlinking of different approaches, tools, technologies and networks a decentralised broadcast structure will be established where each of the network’s nodes serves to both receive and transmit information. Such a structure seeks to break with the classic one-way communication scheme, substituting it with a horizontal peer-to-peer model. π-node wants to explore the many dimensions of radio – its physicality (ether, radio waves and the electromagnetic spectrum), its spatiality (bandwidth, frequencies), its infrastructure (network of radio receivers/emitters), its methods of production and editorial content management (programming boards/teams, recording studios), its methods of metadata reception (RDS/SDR), its history (free radio and pirate radio movements), and its legislation. Most importantly, π-node also wants to examine the future role and potential of radio in a time when everything is going digital.
