Ian Spektor

Ian Spektor is a Kyiv-based sound artist and producer and co-founder of the Plivka and 2c1b communities. Working with field recordings, musique concrète, and electronics, he often employs collage. His practice investigates how music inhabits the vernacular – from the accidental and improvised to the ritual and deliberate – as well as its amateur, liminal, and everyday forms. His early work traced the spontaneous musical gestures of children; more recent projects engage with urban soundscapes and fragments of speech, often drawn from private or incidental conversation. In his documentary work, he treats sound as a medium of memory: archiving voices and environments and shaping them into narratives with minimal intervention, largely through editing.
