The Bohemian-Austrian Baroque composer and violinist Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644–1704) was among the most virtuoso violinists of his day. Among his most well-known works are his scordatura pieces (altered tunings on stringed instruments) like his Rosary Sonatas for violin and continuo and Missa Salisburgensis à 53 voci, which is impressive not only for its opulent instrumentation. In 1690 he was raised to nobility by Emperor Leopold I.
