Heike Vester

Heike Vester (born in Germany in 1969) is a behavioural biologist and studied at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Arctic biology department of the University of Tromsø, Norway. In cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization and the Institute of Cognitive Ethology at the Göttingen University she is currently working on the vocal behaviour of whales. She lectures at the University of Nordland and is the director of Ocean Sounds, a private organisation dedicated to the marine environment, which she founded in Henningsvaer in 2005. Her scientific work focuses on bioacoustics, the vocal communication of marine animals, and the social behaviour of whales (Vocal repertoire of matrilineal social whales). In 2013 she produced the documentary The Secret of the Orca for the BBC “Natural World” series.
