Günther Rabl was born in Linz in 1953, attended HTL Elektrotechnik in Linz, and has played the double bass as an autodidact since he was 16. 1973–75 bassist in a band with the saxophonist Leszek Zadlo, concerts in Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Poland. 1976–78 worked with musicians in the European free jazz scene, duo with the violinist Paul Fickl (steirischer herbst, Musee de l'Art Moderne Paris, Tage Freier Musik Moosham). Solo performances with double bass, tapes, and slide projection by Renate Porstendorfer, performances in Austria and Croatia. 1978–80 improvisation trio with Friedrich Gulda and Ursula Anders (Konzerthaus Wien, Kongresshaus Salzburg, Liederhalle Stuttgart). Training: 1974/75 Lehrgang für Elektroakustik und experimentelle Musik at the University of Music, Vienna (Dieter Kaufmann, Hellmut Gottwald). 1976 founded his own experimental studio. Since 1980 his primary focus has been on tape composition and computer music. In 2004 he received the Cultural Award from the City of Linz. In 2005 his composition EVE was included in the ‘Anthology of Noise and Electronic Music’. 2006 Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica.
