George Lewis

George Lewis is an American composer, musicologist, and trombonist. He is a Professor of American Music at Columbia University, Chair of the Composition Department, and Artistic Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble. He is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin. Among his many honors are the Doris Duke Artist Award (2019), fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation. Widely recognized as a pioneer of interactive computer music, he develops programs that improvise in collaboration with human musicians. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
