Domkantorei Graz

The chamber choir DOMKANTOREI Graz, which was founded in 1985 by J. M. Doeller, serves diverse roles in cathedral liturgy and sacral concerts. Its musical repertoire focuses mainly on 17th and 18th century as well as 20th and 21st century works. In March 1998 the DOMKANTOREI Graz launched the project BACH XXI, a unique series in the Graz concert scene. The concept foresees the performance of the complete sacred cantatas in the correct chronological liturgical order, an undertaking that will come to a close in May 2018. In 2003, when Graz was the Cultural Capital of Europe, the DOMKANTOREI performed the world premiere of Leiden und Tod unseres Herrn und Heilands Jesus Christus. Eine Passion by Michael Radulescu along with the Domkantorei St. Pölten, the orchestra of the Graz cathedral and Studio Percussion Graz.

Josef M. Doeller, founder and choir director of the DOMKANTOREI Graz, gained early experience with the Altenburg Boys’ Choir and studied sacral music and musical education at the Academy of Music in Vienna. He was a member of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, choirmaster of the Vienna Choir Boys, cantor of the Archdiocese of Vienna and church musician at the Wr. Neustadt cathedral. Since 1984 Doeller has served as director of the DOMKANTOREI Graz and taught at the Institute for Church Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. In 2015 he was appointed University Professor.
