Beat Furrer

Beat Furrer (born 1954, Schaffhausen, Switzerland) is a composer and conductor. After studying in Vienna with Otmar Suitner (conducting) and Roman Haubenstock Ramati (composition), he founded the Klangforum Wien in 1985. His oeuvre comprises works for soloists, ensembles, choirs, orchestras and musical theatre, including Die Blinden, Narcissus, Begehren, FAMA, Wüstenbuch and Violetter Schnee. From 1991 to 2023, he was a professor in Graz and co-founder of the impuls Academy. His awards include the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, the Grand Austrian State Prize and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2018). In 2025, his opera Das grosse Feuer premiered in Zurich.
