Alexander Schubert

Alexander Schubert (*1979) studied computer and cognitive sciences in Leipzig while working as a musician and composer in various contexts. He is the artistic director of the electronic studio at the University of Music Lübeck and is meanwhile professor at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, after working there as a lecturer for several years. His special attention is on the physicality of the performers, whose relation to new media is the pivotal element of many works. An ongoing emphasis is on the combination of improvised and notated music – both on a structural and aesthetic level. Since 2009, he has focussed on sensor-based composition both in his musical work and his research activities as a doctorand. His works have been performed by Ensemble intercontemporain, Nadar Ensemble, Ensemble Nikel, Klangforum Wien, and the Decoder Ensemble, among others. He has received numerous awards and grants, from Bourges, ICMC and ZKM, including the Giga-Hertz Award, and was commissioned to write compositions for Wien Modern and Ensemble Resonanz, among others.
