Technologies standardise behaviour by determining the way people perceive the world. "Throughout history, the development of sound technologies has been based exclusively on the experiences of hearing, non-deaf people," says Marco Donnarumma, who is laterally deaf himself. "Centuries of focus on cochlear hearing technologies have made all other ways of perceiving sound seem unimportant, helping to establish the social norm that deafness is the direct opposite of sound. But what is deafness if not another form of perception?" In his multifaceted project "I Am Your Body", Donnarumma invites deaf and hard of hearing people as well as hearing people to join him in leaving the boundaries of normative hearing behind to immerse themselves in a fascinating world full of new sensory experiences, in which modified cochlear implants and AI hearing algorithms do not try to repair a loss, but become new organs of sharing.
