Technology enforces social norms by shaping the way people senses the world. “Throughout history, sound technologies have been designed according only to the experience of hearing, non-deaf people”, says Marco Donnarumma, himself late-deafened. “Centuries of focus on cochlear hearing technologies have made all other ways to perceive sound unimportant, helping thus to establish the social norm that sees deafness as the direct opposite of sound. But what is deafness if not another form of perception?" With his multifaceted series of works “I Am Your Body”, he invites d/Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing audiences to join him in discovering what lies beyond the boundaries of normative hearing. This allows them to dive into a fascinating world full of new sensory experiences, where modified cochlear implants and AI hearing algorithms do not attempt to repair a loss but become novel organs of sharing. As early as 2020, Marco Donnarumma created "Inanis," a commissioned composition by musikprotokoll, to explore the supposed void of the unheard. What is not heard is not absent; rather, it exists in a sensory dimension that one may only need to attune with.
