As a radiophonic final of ORF musikprotokoll 2023, Ö1 Kunstradio presents the premiere of "An Emotional Encyclopedia of War" by the artist, podcast and radio producer Anna Kravets, who was born in Sumy in Ukraine in 1988 and lives in Kiev. In the radio version of her project, the artist places us in an acoustic air-raid shelter and explores the question of how one feels in a state of war?
Every day in the news we see people seeking shelter from bombing in basements, subway shafts and bunkers. But how those seeking protection fare during this existential experience is difficult to convey. The Ukrainian artist conceived her unusual project during her SEMI SILENT Sound Art Residency in Brussels together with the art associations ASCR and Q-O2.
Anna Kravets tried to create a situation that can overcome the limits of reporting. To this end, Kravets invited volunteers in Brussels and during the CTM Festival in Berlin to spend a long time with her in a basement and reflect on what it means to live in a state of emergency. These "Emergency Rehearsal" sessions were recorded. The recordings form the basis for the radio essay. It combines the artist's personal experiences with the emotions of the participants in imaginary dialogues, with excerpts from the concept discussions and with sounds of everyday war life.
"An Emotional Encyclopedia of War" was created as part of the CTM Radio Lab 2023 by Deutschlandfunk Kultur, CTM Festival, ORF musikprotokoll im steirischer herbst festival, Ö1 Kunstradio and Goethe-Institut.
