Yara Mekawei, Ulla Rauter, and Hui Ye all work with the musicality that is inherent in language. They develop their own compositional devices and systems of translation in order to distill and make tangible the music of written texts, the abstract sounds in verbal speech, and the poetry that lies inside speech synthesis technology. In their current collaboration for the SHAPE+ residency, they will explore various texts from a musical standpoint, beginning with excerpts from the book How to Disappear by the Egyptian artist and author Haytham El-Wardany, which deals with the concept of listening as a form of protest that we can practice in everyday life.
