«Zero plays» is a radio-piece by Anton Sarokin, artist from Minsk, Belarus. In his project Anton investigates eerie digital soundscapes: audio from Youtube videos that were never watched. Youtube marks these as 0 views. Not seen or heard, these are the loneliest digital voices in the most overcrowded place, - the network’s phantom collectivity. The artist was interested in the fact that most of the content uploaded online does not come up in search engine, and by seeking these clips out, Sarokin listened and watched hundreds of fragments of someone’s life, uploaded for some unknown reason. He calls the sound from this unseen part of Youtube - the sound of the deep. This journey through digital solitude of others appeared to arrive in the centre of self - the moments that bring out feelings of extreme loneliness or connectedness actualised the artist’s own zero played narratives and made him look in to the deep of himself.

In his practice, Anton focuses on questions of individual and collective memory, the politics of sound and silence, and the relationship between music and the social sphere. He works with recombinational potential of ‘found footage’ – recordings from personal archives, artifacts of pop culture, digital trash, field recordings, memes – and assembles these materials to question the meanings contained in the media.
