Topographical radio play

The influence of the conservative right wing has been growing for several years now. The overt exclusion of those perceived to be different, people with different national, ethnic or religious roots, appears to have become socially acceptable once more. Populist right-wing polemics, often argued with religion, drowns out the arguments of those trying to research the necessary foundations. “The left-hand path” is a walk-in, acoustic portrait of manners of a society that has let globalised markets and power relations become the basis of its cultural, social and political structures.Armed with smartphones, headphones and an app specially developed for this project, visitors are invited to go on a walk around the centre of Graz, over which Marcus Maeder has spanned a virtual field of discourse: new paths of thought and argumentation will open during a city walk from the Schlossberg to the Stadtpark.

CineChamber invites you to a new dimension of audiovision.
It is both an instrument and a presentation platform; a surround technology specially developed by Recombinant Media Labs for audio and video that immerses us in new worlds of sound and images all specially created for CineChamber. Together with the four partner festivals of the ECAS network project “Networking Tomorrow’s Art for an Unknown Future”, a whole array of new pieces has been created – some by Austrian musicians and video artists. The event kicks off with the tightly packed, approximately three-hour opening evening with numerous world and Austrian premières; the following afternoons will feature material from the already abundant archive.

Ghosts, shadows and revenants in today’s music

For around five years now, the expansive field of music between Sampledelica and Dub Noir has been operating under the name of “Hauntology”. What these artists in this heterogeneous scene have in common is their work with ghostly echoes and vintage sounds from the past, sometimes interpreted as the projection of a lost future. Characteristically, they have a penchant for paranormal (media) phenomena, invoking their uncanny closeness in many different ways. In addition, they often play with effects of intimacy and distance and tap into pools of references from obscure film and television soundtracks. An exploration of music aesthetics, that has long since cast off its retro label.

Since the nineties, Polish artist Agata Zubel has deliberately presented herself not as a composer, but rather as an agile performer who makes little difference between her preferred means of expression, be it drums, vocals or composition. In the best traditions of musikprotokoll, this year’s Klangforum concert blends discoveries and unexpected elements with the certain quality of what cannot be planned in detail. In addition to Zubel and the composers Gerald Resch and Brice Pauset, who are returning to musikprotokoll after several years’ absence, the programme also features Elisabeth Harnik, a Styrian composer and performer.

A gesture is nonverbal communication. So is there an image without a gesture? A gesture without an image? Music without gesture? What gestures act in music? What do we understand when we hear acoustic gestures, what does our body understand when it assimilates gestures that we have heard? Clemens Gadenstätter has sketched three compositional answers to these questions by working on musical figures and gestures that have become images with fixed meaning. He bases this work on the Baroque theory of figures and musical rhetoric, the acoustic images of 19th and 20th-century programme music (all of which seem to have lost none of their impact, for example in contemporary classical music), and the codified image sounds of contemporary film music and Gebrauchsmusik. “Iconosonics” gives these codified sound figures back their purely musical, acoustic, rhythmic and harmonic qualities and sets out in search of those yet to be discovered. While their meanings remain as memories, they can be experienced anew as a result of the transformation.

Gustav Mahler composition competition concert and prize ceremony

Hungary, Serbia, Czechia: it is no coincidence that the countries from where the composers of this concert hail, are reminiscent of an old musikprotokoll tradition from the early seventies. Composer Marko Nikodijevic, for example featured at the event with a commissioned composition almost ten years ago. He now lives in Germany. This year he has been invited to perform a new piece, a kind of Hommage à Liszt for a large orchestra. Canada and Switzerland, two other countries of origin of the composers, indicate that part of this concert has been taken from the jury’s decision of the international Gustav Mahler composition competition in 2010, in which the Vienna ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra also took part.

Time Inventors’ Kabinet (A)

Sonification is the use of audio to convey information. Unlike visualisation, such audio translations can be perceived without looking. Different interpretations can combine and intertwine in sound. In the context of the Time Inventors’ Kabinet, the interpreted information comes from wind clocks from all over Europe. The pieces developed on this basis will run through the rooms of ESC im LABOR in the form of an installation and will be presented as a performance at musikprotokoll.

Friends are friends, no matter from which world. And being a friend means trusting – and it is on trust, both musical and artistic, that programmes such as this are founded. Some things are lost in the process, while others are unexpectedly added. The result, hopefully, is a mixture of precision and openness that leads to a combination such as this: the string trio of veteran radical Brian Ferneyhough, the latest piece by his Spanish student Hèctor Parra, French sound bricoleur Hugues Dufourt and Austrian sound conceptionist Georg Friedrich Haas, as a joint concert for which Haas even composes out the dualism of structural precision and a penchant for the uncontrollable when he confronts his meticulous compositional constructions with difficult to control, two-metre-long metal pendulums.

In February 2010, Lawrence English and Werner Dafeldecker visited two bases on the Antarctic peninsula to work on an artistic project that allowed a sensory experience of the specific social, historical and geographical characteristics of this region. With the aid of a broad range of analog and digital technologies, the two musicians documented life at and around the two research stations Marambio and Esperanza. They recorded above and below the water surface, penguin colonies, birds, sea-lions, leopard seals, glacial fracturing and snow-storms. In “Esperanza”, English and Dafeldecker condense the collected audio material into a radio play that offers an insight into the complex processes of this fascinating world.

Series of electronic music concerts

Acoustic parallel worlds and how to tackle them artistically – this is the red thread of this year’s electroacoustic series at steirischer herbst/musikprotokoll.Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Michael Esposito’s parallel universe is one of spirits and the deceased. Hausswolff, concept artist and composer from Stockholm and Esposito, ghost hunter, sound artist and researcher from Chicago, weave electronic sounds and “EVP” (Electronic Voice Phenomena) to create dense acoustic collages. For Achim Wollscheid and Bernhard Schreiner, parallelism is an abstraction, an idea that dreams of simultaneous correspondence and division. The two artists, who work in Frankfurt, confront each other blind – visually separated on stage – with tonal variations of different solos, in an attempt to connect them.Jason Lescalleet, an artist devoted to researching and transforming insignificant everyday sounds, concludes the series of concerts. Lescalleet uses simple analog technology such as belt driven machines to transpose supposedly familiar sounds into a different reality, that are however, none the less incredible for the listener. As if with an acoustic magnifying glass, without reference, he designs new worlds of sound.
